The clay maestro Rafael Nadal is the favourite to win the ATP Tour Rome Masters despite losing to Novak Djokovic in the Madrid Open final on Sunday in straight sets. The Serbian’s impressive 7-5 6-4 win took his 2011 undefeated streak to 32 matches whilst simultaneously ending Nadal’s record of 37 consecutive wins on clay. At 2/1 with Stan James you won’t get much better odds for Djokovic to record his fourth ATP Masters Series win of the year.
Rafa’s confidence would have taken some battering following his defeat to Djokovic, and the Spaniard faces a tough draw in Rome with the likes of Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych and Thomaz Bellucci in his side of the draw. He faces a possible semi-final clash with Federer, whom he beat in three sets last week. Nadal also has a 10-1 record against Federer on clay and with the Swiss struggling for form on the surface this year you would count it as a big upset for him to overcome Nadal and reach the final. Federer can nonetheless never be ruled out, and Stan James have priced him at 11/1 to win his first Masters tournament of the year.
After disappointing in Madrid, Andy Murray will be determined to bounce back and put in an impressive performance in Rome ahead of the French Open later this month. You can back the Scot with Stan James at 25/1. Elsewhere David Ferrer looks good value at 18/1, whilst Thomas Berdych, who took a set of Djokovic in the semi-finals last week, is priced at 50/1. Alternatively Gael Monfils, who bizarrely had to retire last week after an allergic reaction to cheese, has long odds of 80/1.
