Cheltenham ‘open’ for business for a fantastic weekend of Racing
All National Hunt fans will be casting their eyes over the final two days of the Cheltenham Open meeting this weekend in order to glean as much information as possible regarding the early season from of several Cheltenham Festival hopefuls.
The race that takes centre stage of course is the Grade 3, Paddy Power Gold Cup, which features one of the leading fancies for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in Long Run, trained by Nicky Henderson. The race which takes place on Saturday afternoon, has attracted a big field with 20 standing their ground with one day to go before the race.
Rain has been forecast during the course of the weekend but the going on the old course should be no worse than good to soft in places which should make for a speedy race.
Long Run, who will be partnered by amateur Sam Waley-Cohen, who is the son of the owner, arrived in Britain last year from France and made a huge impression on his early runs. His 13 length victory in his first race, the Grade 1 Feltham Novices Chase marked him up as a major force to be reckoned with, which he confirmed by taking the Grade 2, Kingmaker Novices Chase a few weeks later at Warwick in equally emphatic style.
However he certainly ‘fluffed his lines’ when he went to the 2010 Cheltenham Festival to take on the Grade 1 RSA Chase where he managed only third place behind winner, Weapon’s Amnesty. Waley-Cohen in fact was criticised by many for holding up the 5 year old in that race, but Henderson is perfectly happy for him to keep the ride this weekend.
Long Run is almost certain to go off favourite for the race, with the biggest threats to him coming from the David Pipe trained, Great Endeavour and Edward O’Grady’s Catch Me. That said, Pipe, has almost already conceded the race, believing that Long Run is a ‘nailed on certainty’ to take the honours.
Champion trainer, Paul Nicholls has three runners in the race with his best chance probably being Tchico Polos, winner of the Grade 2, Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter on November 2nd. Nicholls has confirmed that he has come out of that race in fine form, but believes that the Paddy Power Gold Cup might have come around a little too quick for him. He also runs top weight, Poquelin, who will have 5lb taken off by jockey, Ian Popham. His third runner, Gwanako, will need to improve if he is to trouble the main contenders.
Local trainer, Nigel Twiston-Davies also has three runners, which includes Little Josh who dead heated Weird Al last time out at Carlisle and who will have the trainer’s son on board. On Cheltenham Festival form he has quite a lot to find with Long Run, but might well be good enough to run into a place. Possibly the better option of the Twiston-Davies team is Pigeon Island who will improve from his last run when third behind Kilmurry in the Kleinwort Benson Novice Chase at Cheltenham last month. He has stable jockey, Paddy Brennan on board!
The other big race at the meeting is the Grade 3 Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, which is the feature race of the final day on Sunday. Amongst the favourites is the Phillip Hobbs trained, Menorah, winner of the 2010 Supreme Novice Hurdle over course and distance in March and who has very definite Champion Hurdle aspirations this season.
Favourite for the race however is the Paul Nicholls trained Sanctuaire, who has been impressing every at home at Ditcheat and who also won at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
Another major ‘player’ in this race will be the Jonjo O’Neill trained, Get Me Out Of Here, who was just a head behind Menorah in the Supreme in March. He warmed up for this with a pretty lacklustre effort when finishing only 7th in a Listed race at Ascot a fortnight ago. On that form he will need to improve if he is going to win on Sunday.
Also on Sunday is the Sinbad Testimonial 2010/2011 Chase which should see 2009 Arkle Trophy Chase winner, Forpadydeplasterer return to winning ways after five second place finishes last season, which included four at Grade 1 level and one at Grade 2. His major threat is probably the Paul Nicholls entry Tataniano, who looked a very good chaser in the making when winning the Grade 1 Maghulls Novices Chase at Aintree at the end of last season.

TBR: Inside the List
SATISFACTION: Keith Richards’s autobiography, “Life” (reviewed by Liz Phair on the cover of the Nov. 14 Book Review), hits the hardcover nonfiction list at No. 1, unsurprisingly. (My favorite line, from Page 524: “I’ve been cooking bangers all my life, and I only just found out from this lady on TV that you have to put bangers in a cold pan.”)
Keith Richards The shots at Mick Jagger have drawn lots of headlines, but it turns out that Sir Mick isn’t the only one who has been slowly sinking into the slough of respectability. In the advance publicity for “Life,” it was revealed that Richards harbored an early ambition to be a librarian, and that he once considered getting “professional training” in the Dewey Decimal System to cope with his home library. His one-stop book tour in the United States began and ended at the New York Public Library, where he arrived wearing a natty beige fedora and trailing a genially sulfurous air. (Somebody get this man a contract for a vampire mash-up novel, stat!) Then again, Richards has a way to go before he catches up to the Stones’ other guitarist. “Spend or Expend,” an exhibition of Ronnie Wood’s paintings and drawings, is currently on view at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, whose director went so far as to compare Wood’s satirical vision to Daumier.
CROSSFIRE: Glenn Beck’s “Broke” charges to No. 2 in its first week on the hardcover nonfiction list, while Jon Stewart’s “Earth (The Book)” drops to No. 3, amid rumors that the “Daily Show” host planned to hold a Rally to Restore Sanity to the Best-Seller List in Times Square. The right certainly seems to have swept the literary midterms, with Condoleezza Rice’s “Extraordinary, Ordinary People” (No. 6); Bill O’Reilly’s “Pinheads and Patriots” (No. 7); and Michael Savage’s “Trickle Up Poverty” (No. 10). Besides Stewart, there are no liberals on the list — unless Stephen Sondheim counts? His “Finishing the Hat” opens at No. 11.
HONK IF YOU’RE WRITING: November is the cruelest month, at least for literary agents bombarded with the fruits of National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo. Here’s how it works: Writers — or “Wrimos,” in the official parlance — register at the event’s Web site, turn on the word-count widget and start cranking out about 1,500 words a day, without stopping to wonder if the whole thing stinks. “It’s all about quantity, not quality,” the Web site explains. “The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks and write on the fly.” The Web site features a host of motivational tools, including merit badges, a Procrastination Station that dispenses advice like “Plot while driving” (is that legal?) and a running tally of total wordage pumped out by participants around the world — 191,707,630 words as of this writing, including some 33,030 originating in Pakistan and 23,549 billowing forth from the Isle of Skye. NaNoWriMo’s never-say-edit spirit has attracted plenty of haters, but it has also given birth to at least one bona fide smash best seller: Sara Gruen’s “Water for Elephants,” now No. 23 on the extended trade paperback fiction list.

So You Think favourite to win the 2010 Melbourne Cup
With a prize fund of $5m Australian Dollars (just over £3 million in real money) it is no surprise that this horse race brings the whole country to a standstill! It will take place for us however in the early hours of tomorrow morning so only for insomniacs and homesick Australians.
The race for the uninitiated runs from Flemington Racecourse and it is a handicap race for horses aged 3 years and over with the 24 runners hopefully covering the full distance of 2 miles on a course that has been set to soft.
Favourite for this years Melbourne Cup is the Bart Cummings trained So You Think and ridden by jockey Steven Arnold who looks they may have this race sewn up. Second favourite is Shocking ridden by Michael Rodd and trained by Mark Kavanagh who is now down to odds of 8/1. The freebetsblog.com tip for this race is the 10/1 shot Americain ridden by Gerald Mosse who should be great for an each way bet.
All odds are suppled by Ladbrokes who on this race will be payout out on the first 4 at a 1/4 the odds.

Chelsea favourites in tonights clash with Spartak Moscow
Chelsea welcome Spartak Moscow to Stamford Bridge for tonight’s Group F game in a their UEFA Champions League campaign, currently Chelsea have the maximum 9 points after their first 3 games in Group F and victory tonight against Spartak Moscow would guarantee them their place in the next stage with two games to spare and give them the top spot of the group.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side will be confident going into the game having beat Spartak 2-0 last month but will have to do so without French winger Florent Malouda who picked up an injury to his ankle in Chelsea’s 2-1 win in the Barclays Premiership over Blackburn Rovers.
1/4 – Chelsea win9/2 – Draw12/1 – Spartak Moscow winThere is a great cash back offer available on this game from bookmakers Betfred who will if Chelsea can score 4 or more goals in this game then they will refund all of the losing first and goal scorer bets as well as correct score and score cast bets made on the game. Paul Hanagan favourite to win 2010 Flat Jockey’s Championship
The battle to become the winner of the 2010 British Flat Jockeys Championship is now in its final week as the flat season comes to a close and there are just two contenders in with a chance to win this seasons title. Last year it was won by Ryan Moore for the second year in succession as he rode home 174 winners, 12 down on his winning total for the previous year and a long way off the record of 269 wins set in 1947 by 26 times winner of the event Gordon Richards.
Earlier in the week it looked as if Hanagan (who at the start of the season was at odds of 40/1 to win the title) had the advantage after he rode 2 winners at Wolverhampton at the start of the week but Hughes countered that with 2 wins of his own yesterday at Kempton, Hanagan is currently still leading Hughes by 186 to 183 wins, but there are rumours that Hughes may cancel his plans to the Breeders Cup for Saturday so that he can attempt to claim the 2010 Championship.
Odds for this title are supplied courtesy of bookmakers Paddy Power.

A hat trick of cash back offers on tonights UEFA Champions League matches
Tonight is a very busy schedule for the teams from the home nations as three British sides are battling it out in the Group stages of the UEFA Champions League. Of the fixtures only one is at home as Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham side take on Inter Milan in the second leg of their group A clash, Spurs lost the away match 4-3 following the early sending off of Gomes which led to a 4-0 lead for the Champions by half time but Gareth Bale knocked in a hat trick to give them a chance for tonight’s leg. Inter are currently leading Group A with Spurs second on 4 points, a win tonight for Inter will see them reach the last 16.
Bookies Betfred are undecided who has the advantage in the Spurs v Inter Milan match odds as they think either team will take all 3 points in this clash, maybe a draw is on the cards?
Rangers manage to hold Spanish team Valencia to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox thanks to Edu who managed to score at both ends during the game which enabled Manchester United to go top of Group A with rangers directly behind them. They travel tonight to the Estadio Mestalla and a win tonight for Walter Smith’s side could see his team guaranteed a place in the final 16.
Rangers look like they will have uphill battle to get anything out of this game with Valencia being the bookies choice to come away with something from this game.
It looks as if in the Bursaspor v Manchester United game that it will be a clear win for Sir Alex’s side tonight and his side look set to bag all three points in the clash against the Turkish side and progress to the last 16. They willl however have to do this without central defender Rio Ferdinand who has not travelled with the side to Turkey who has been omitted to rest according to Sir Alex
4/1 – Bursaspor win8/11 – Manchester United Win5/2 – DrawTo celebrate Bales three goals last week the bookies Betfred are giving punters a hat trick of cash back offers on tonight’s UEFA Champions League matches
First off if Tottenham’s in form Gareth Bale scores the last goal of the home fixture tonight they will refund all losing first and goal scorer bets made on the game.
In the Valencia v Ranges match if Rangers striker Kenny Miller can score the final goal of the game then you get any losing first and last goal scorers bets refunded.
Click here to place your Champions League bet with Betfred
Finally to round off the hat trick of offers if Manchester United can score 3 or more goals tonight then Betfred will then refund all of the losing correct score and scorecast singles bets made on the game as well as first and goal scorer bets.
All matches begin tonight at 7.45pm and all the above odds are supplied courtesy of bookmakers Betfred.

How much longer can Wagner survive on the X Factor 2010?
The live finals of X Factor 2010 are now in their fifth week and we have already had to say goodbye to 6 sets of contestants which have included former hopefuls Belle and John Adeleye. We have also seen a big change around in the order of favourites with former favourites appearing almost nowhere in the frame. Once such fall from grace is that of former favourite Aiden Grimshaw who has found himself sliding down the odds ladder to be just behind the heartthrob/scary bloke Wagner.
However it looks like a safe bet to say that the final of the finals will feature Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson who have impressed both the judges and the viewers, a win for Matt would see Aussie songstress Dannii Minougues first win as mentor but Cheryl Cole’s protégé Rebecca is just behind in the betting odds.
All odds for X Factor 2010 come from bookmakers Paddy Power.
